Security Systems

Major growth in the security industry and advances in technology over the past few years have meant that there is now more choice than ever before and the cost of an effective intruder alarm system may be less prohibitive than you think.

It is vital that you take care when selecting an installer for your system. Most insurers recommend that your home is protected by an alarm system installed and held under an annual maintenance contract with a NACOSS (National Approval Council for Security Systems) approved installer.

NACOSS is an independent regulatory body that recognises only companies who conform to BS4737 on alarm installations and follow strict codes of practice in system design. A list of approved companies can be obtained by calling NACOSS on 01628 637512 or visiting www.nacoss.org.

There are two basic types of alarm system:

  • Remote Monitored - In addition to an external siren, these systems are connected to a central monitoring station, to which a signal is sent and subsequently relayed to the police.
  • Bells Only -Systems that sound a local bell or siren only, in the hope of alerting neighbours and deterring a thief from proceeding.

Many factors need to be taken into account when choosing a system, for example the level of occupancy, the geographical location, the type and value of your contents. Your NACOSS approved installer is an expert in designing a system unique to your individual requirements.
